The taiyaki, or warm waffle cone pastry, is often the easiest component to identify of the Ah-Boong. While literally translating to “fried fish,” the taiyaki uses familiar pancake batter with no ingredients from fish whatsoever. First created in Japan and brought to Korea during the Colonial Period, the pastries were shaped as the namesake tai fish or red sea bream to increase their popularity. The tradition continues to this day with many other fish-shaped delectables available in Japan and Korea including the kingoyaki (baked goldfish) and the packaged samanco ice cream sandwich.
Somisomi then offers a plethora of ice creams, fillings, and toppings to fill the fish’s mouth and complete the Ah-boong experience. The Korean Style soft serve is lactose free and comes in a wide variety of unique flavors hard to find altogether anywhere else. The ice cream is slightly less sweet than typical western preparations, which contrasts well with the impressive assortment of toppings ranging from fun Fruity Pebble cereal to the more traditional red bean and taro pastes. With the variety of flavors and textures available, no two Ah-Boong are alike!
