Innovation Spotlight - Spirulina
Is your spirulina green or blue? Millions have turned to this algae blend for its reported health and beauty benefits whose market share in 2022 was valued at $540M and projected to reach $1.1 Billion by 2030. Different preparations of spirulina are available, the most popular being the self-contained pill forms or powders to add into smoothies.
As types of cyanobacteria, the algae incorporated into spirulina utilize more photosynthetic pigments in their energy metabolism in addition to chlorophyll in order to optimize photosynthesis in lower light environments. This includes the pigment phycocyanin that has been researched for its profound antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Products labeled as blue spirulina are often filtered to extract even more of this antioxidant, while green spirulina when not further processed contains a plethora of bioavailable nutrients.
The complete biomass of the algae includes a rich source of iron, essential fatty acids, and a protein profile superior to beef. With these benefits in mind coupled with the inherent ease to raise microalgae compared to livestock, research has begun on testing the scalability and modularity of spirulina production for food, including in outer space.
Dr. Asaf Tzachor, head researcher cultivating spirulina at the ON Geothermal Park in Iceland, remarks that "Nutritional security, climate change mitigation, and climate change adaptation can go hand in hand. All consumers must do is to adopt a bit of Icelandic Spirulina into their meals and diets instead of beef meat. It's healthier, safer, and more sustainable. Whatever change we wish to see in the world should be manifested in our dietary choices."
