Innovation Spotlight - Craft Instant Coffee
“Coffee and love taste best when hot,” coffee sourcer Rediet Tadele of We the Origin remarks on the old Ethiopian saying. “It is our connection to our country’s history, an essential part of our family’s gatherings, and a way we catch up with friends and welcome guests.” Coffee often takes a more fevered and essential and utilitarian role in Western culture as we head for our lattes at the anonymous mobile order pickup or drive thru, and Ethiopian Hip-Hop artist Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye hopes to slowly reinvent.

Samra Origins Vol. 1 features a curated collection of Ethiopian coffees, including the exceptionally rare Ethiopia Wolde Faye Koricha COE #7, a naturally processed single origin coffee from the Oromia region that was ranked seventh in the 2022 Ethiopian Cup of Excellence. This unique roast was picked specifically by The Weeknd and his mother Samra, whom the blend is named after, as it perfectly captured the “notes of juicy raspberry and citrus meld with rich caramel and floral aroma to whisk you away to an Ethiopia that lives in Samra’s memory and was passed down to Abel.”
Samra Origins is also the second coffee line that Blue Bottle offers as an instant coffee, intended to bring the intimate Ethiopian Coffee experience anywhere a piece of tranquility and community can be made in the day. While lighter and with a more floral flavor than the espresso blend, the beans go through a similar custom process that roasts and extracts the rich Ethiopian profile which is then slowly freeze-dried and crystallized. As with other premium quality instant coffees, Samra origins can be used to make iced coffees and lattes as the coffee crystals dissolve in seconds.
In honor of Samra Origins, Blue Bottle has partnered with Tesfaye’s XO record label to contribute to The XO Humanitarian Fund which “supports the United Nation World Food Programme’s lifesaving emergency operations in hunger hotspots around the world, with a special focus on Ethiopia where an estimated 11.8 million people require urgent humanitarian food assistance.”
