Debuting earlier in this month in Bolingbrook, Illinois with more pilot locations planned in Texas for 2024, McDonald’s sets a course to more fully capture the premium beverage category with CosMc’s! The menu of trending lattes, cold brews, and energy drinks have fully transparent ingredient lists, intended to be further customized with available offerings that include as dairy substitutes, fruity boba, and flavored syrups,

“One area of focus has been identifying ways for McDonald’s to participate in attractive and fast-growing categories,” CEO Chris Kempczinski explains. “[W]e’ve honed in on specialty beverages and coffee.” In the past year, Starbucks has seen the continued success of customized premium beverages, with its posted 8% increase in sales in the past quarter driven primarily by higher sales per transaction.

With the viral success of the Grimace Birthday Shake on social media, McDonald’s hopes its debuting restaurant concept is more aptly equipped to capture the trending beverage experience.“ Handcrafted beverages, customizations - things like that aren’t going to work at scale in a McDonald’s,” Stephens research analyst Joshua Long comments, “and so they have to do it in a separate environment.” To round off the experience however, other favorites “from the McDonald’s universe” such as the Egg McMuffin and McFlurry are also available to guarantee an innovate yet also  familiar experience.
